I have not experienced this.  I have shot in some pretty warm butterfly
houses (here in Houston and in St. Louis) and there was lots of sun.
However, I assume the problem occurs when the lens gets hot, and I have not
been in a situation where my lens got really warm or hot.

I may test it.  So for the lens has been great.  The only problem I had with
AF/MF was when I first mounted the new lens.  I would not manual focus.
After a couple of time auto focusing, it would then MF.

I have also read that some have had some incompatibility problems with the
EOS 3 and the Sigma 180, but that has not been my experience.
