Those of us fortunate enough to have an EOS 30 or better and a 550EX can of
course examine the precise effect in a dimly lit room with preview button.
Just set everything up the way you think it might work and then check on a
blank wall (with a subject if you like) by pressing the DoF preview button.
The exact shape and quality of the flash light on the subject can be seen
on the wall. You may go through a set of batteries but if using
rechargeable alkalines, which are a very economical option, this is almost
negligible.
