Norman, I'll leave the film part of your questions to someone with more
expertise in that area but wanted to mention that I've been having some nice
results with a Hoya Diffuser in 77mm for some portrait stuff with the 70-200
f/2.8 L.  It's not a very expensive filter, I snagged mine off Ebay for $25
(or they're $41.95 at B&H).  Tiffen's Soft/FX that's available in different
levels of diffusion/softening effect would probably be better for more
professional application however.  They run $62-$68 or so.
