Thats just Canon marketing.. ideally the 550EX will work on any Type B body in ETTL mode and any type A body in TTL mode. Same goes for the 420EX. What you dont get with the 420EX is the manual controls and you cant use it as a master flash in a wireless setup.
The 420EX is lighter than the 550EX but slower in recharge times. I find the 550EX recharges itself at a much higher speed after a full burst. In terms of handling, the EOS 3 will nicely balance a 550EX, with a smaller body the Elan 7(EOS30), the flash makes the camera a bit too heavy. The 420EX will perform just as well as the 550EX in various distances, bear in mind the 550EX has a higher GN. Nothing will confuse the focus points on the EOS 3 with either of the flashes. Hope this helps :) Cheers Ethan Privacy: ACNielsen collects personal information to provide and market our services.
