I've been using EOS 300 with EF50/1.8. I have only a few that are maybe 1/2
stop darker, and have some that are 1.5 stop darker. I thought that the
metering system should compensate for the light loss automatically.

You might have a point with 18% grey issue, I thought about that already. If
think that 30/50 and 300 meters the same, as 300 has advanced 35 zone
metering (as I think does the 30).... ?
