Jules, others will probably give you better input on the wide angle
prime/zoom question, but I wanted to say that I've had my EF 28-135 IS for
going on three years now without a whit of a problem. And I do use the lens
frequently. The only issue with this lens for me is that due to rather
loose construction, it has gathered a few dust bunnies under the front
element where other zooms I have, have not. Operationally speaking however,
it has been a fine lens. And Peter Kotsinadelis' comments a few days ago
about the lens' sharpness corresponds with my experience.

I use the Cokin system for landscape and scenery and think they're great. A
very versatile filter system and you can do some very creative things with
the grads. They're better when you're set up though as they don't travel
well, when you're moving around they tend to snag on things. Oh, and they
don't work out well when it's raining much either. And I do certainly enjoy
the lower cost factor.
