Hi David, Let me clarify what the 28-135 IS can do since Pierre has suggested it. The EF 28-135 3.5-5.6 IS USM lens is very similar to the EF 28-105 3.5-4.5 USM but with more focal length and the addition of Image Stabilization. The 28-135IS is also much larger, heavier, uses an odd filter size and even when purchased used costs 3 times as much as an EF 28-105USM. The 28-135 IS also is a somewhat slower lens especially at the long end but this is offset by the IS feature. Canon's IS feature is also useful at shorter focal lengths and can be handy to use on still subjects under low light conditions without a monopod. But IS cannot stop subject motion blur, IS only reduces the blur induced by camera shake. The IS feature as implemented on the 28-135IS is a first generation technology and lacks the second generation IS mode 2 operation (as initially seen on EF 300 4L IS and all newer L class IS lenses), feature which produces excellent results while panning. Canon specifically suggests that on the 28-135IS lens that IS be turned off while panning or used on a tripod to avoid problems. Some have not had problems while panning slowly or tripod mounted, I've seen erratic operation of IS on a 28-135IS when panning and while using a solid tripod on both EOS 5QD and EOS 1n bodies. Something to think about, for the same money as an EF 28-135 3.5-5.6 IS USM you could buy MINT a condition EF 20-35 3.5-4.5USM AND EF 28-105 3.5-4.5USM lenses (about $450USD), and have the start of a very versatile lens system. All you'd have to do is add a nice used EF 200 2.8L and maybe an EF 1.4X and maybe EF 2x converters and you'd have a very complete lens system covering 20mm to almost 400mm!
