Chip, that is BS and you know it. When they test something they show the results in numbers. Now their editorial that surrounds the test is another story. Even when the numbers show a poor performer they always write something to say otherwise. But if you read the results in numbers they are correct. They also agree with Photodo tests. Now Photodo uses the most advanced Hasselblad MTF Test equipment. Personally, I think they are the most accurate. As to other magazines, they may have some slant. CDI seems to favor Nikon, FOTO and COLORFOTO Zeiss and Leica (after all they are a German magazine), etc. > You might just as well use my tests, at least I used more > than one sample of each lens over a long period of time. > I've used all of the non-macro Canon 50mm lenses, > EF 50 1.8, EF 50 1.8II, EF 50 1.4USM and EF 50 1L and bought > an EF 50 1.4USM based on my own field tests using transparency > film. Built quality wise the EF 50 1L is the best > built with the EF 50 1.8USM, EF 50 1.8, > and EF 50 1.8II following. Seems what you are saying agrees for the most part with Pop Photo tests, y'know they are the ones you disagree with. ;-) You will not see a difference in the 50mm F1.8 i v. II unless you have exceptionally large prints to compare. The F1.4 will be better than the F1L at certain apertures since designing a faster lens forces compromise. Example, compare a 50mm F1.4 with the Canon 50mm macro. The slower lens (macro) will be sharper. Another point I have a 58mm Super Angulon (medium format) with a max of F5.6. When I shoot at F8 and F11, there isn't a lens on the planet that will beat the results. The downside, I have to use a tripod or fast film.
