The AF pattern will cover all 7 sensors of the Elan 7E, but will only emit when you manually choose one of the 5-in-a-row sensors (either with the keypad or with ECF). You can trick the camera into emitting the AF beam by using area-AF mode (pull your eye away from the viewfinder so that ECF is unable to work, or push the # button if not using ECF). But if you use the 550EX in TTL mode (flash CF3=1), you will continue to suffer, since AF assist is emitted only when using the Centre AF sensor.
