Peoples expectations of quality are dropping further and further. One
example are people who buy disposables despite having (nominally) better
P&S cameras. Or the proliferation of horrible quality 1 hour photo labs. Or
the best would be the number of people on rec.photo.35 who talk about
"pin-sharp" blow-ups made at Walmart from their disposables.

In any case, except for the formal portraits, most customers in the U.S.
are not that discerning and would be thrilled by actually sharp photos
taken by a 35mm SLR or high-end digital. The cost savings for going digital
allow you to take lots of photos and still compete with Uncle Ed with his
CoolPix, at least.

p.s. Perhaps another good example are the baskets of disposable cameras at
weddings with notes attached to them to take photos and drop them off at
the end of the day.
