FWIW, I bought a new EOS 5 in Nov. 1999, and the command dial lasted fewer than
30 rolls before breaking, although I was always careful to press the
lock-release button every time I moved the dial. I ended up spending the US$100+
for the Horizon Electronics fix before selling the body last spring. I replaced
the 5 with a 7/30 and have no regrets.

So I think the answer to your question is "no."
