My experience: the 1n with the 550ex on top can focus just about anywhere, if you use 
the middle focusing point. haven't been testing this, but I can't remember having 
trouble focusing with my flash attached. 
and also: the 1n body i far better built than the 5(A2).

i would go for the 1n
