I'll go and check, but I think it works in my EOS50E.

Yes. bracketing the ambient light while leaving flash exposure equal. That's
what I'm looking for. Of course, I can do it manually, but I miss the
feature...
I can achieve FEB it with the 550ex.

Yes, except in Tv, where the aperture is used instead (when posible)
