I don't know all of the differences off hand, but the biggest is the
550EX does e-ttl while the 540EZ does not. The difference I have seen
is that when I shoot my -5 and the 540 I have to set the 540 to -1/3.
When i am shooting my -3 and the 550 EX its plug and shoot and things
work out great.
My suggestion would be to get the 550EX since it is newer and should
work well with any new EONS bodies you may buy. (Elan-7, EOS-3,
etc.....)
