Contacts could be one reason but you say you have cleaned them. Low
level light is probably not the reason (even if the lens hood has
blocked the AF assistent light) as the camera still should make an
attempt to focus. Now if the cameras 'thinks' the object is closer then
your minimum focusing distance and you are already at that distance
then nothing will happen. Another reason could be that your lens was
set to 3m-infinity but the focusing distance was set closer to that
(either by you are when you took the camera out of your camera bag). In
that case the camera does not move the lens automatically out into the
3-infinity range but it simple doesn't do anything.
