You can see some ASA 1600 night images I took with a D30 at http://community.webshots.com/album/16942524hhQwiGmdnM. The grain, in my experience, is about what I'm accustomed to seeing with slide film developed at 1600. The real advantage I found with the D30 was that if I really, really needed ASA1600 for a few shots, I could easily & quickly make the change and then back to 800 or 400 when conditions changed. So much more flexible in that regard than film.
But forget the autofocus in the low-light concert settings.
