One possibility, since it sounds like these symptoms
have been happening intermittantly:

Some 2CR5 batteries are shorter than others, and short
ones don't always make good contact in the battery
compartment.  Try folding a small piece of paper over
2 or 3 times and putting it between the battery and
battery door, to force the battery into good contact. 
You might also try cleaning the battery and camera
contacts.

I had a similar intermittant problem with my Elan II a
number of years ago that was solved this way.  Since
yours died completely, this might not have anything to
do with it, but it's worth a try.
