There is no guarantee that this will happen to you, but be prepared for at least the possibility that the security screeners will want to open your camera back and look through all your lenses to make sure they are what they appear to be (in a manner not unlike the way you will be required to turn on a laptop computer if you bring one along). I have daily contact with airline travellers and some have reported having this happen. So, if you are taking a lot of gear, be sure to allow extra time at the airport for a rather lengthy screening process. Also, it is a good idea to take all your film out of the cannisters and carry them loose in a clear zipper-lock bag so the screeners don't need to open anything in order to see that your film is really film. Although generally speaking you are entitled to a hand inspection of any item upon request in the US (but not in Europe), the easier you make it for the screeners the more likely you won't have a problem. You may wish to toss a couple rolls of high-speed film (ISO 1600 or faster) in the bag, since even the screeners are supposed to know that the carry-on scanners will fog high-speed film; the fast film may allow you to get a hand inspection even on your return trip. DO NOT PUT ANY UNDEVELOPED FILM IN CHECKED BAGGAGE!! The newer baggage scanners will fog it, and if you put it in lead-lined bags the operator will just turn up the intensity until the scanner can see what's in the bag. LAX appears to be one of the more strict airports in the US regarding security . . . although it is possible you may go through immigration/customs in NY. Finally, it would probably be a good idea to bring along some sort of proof of ownership of your equipment if you want to avoid any possibily of being charged import duty either here or on your return.
