Wondering what the groups consensus of opinion is on NON Canon extenders (probably 1.4x), mostly for use with 100-400 lens on an EOS30/Elan 7E, both as a simple focal length multiplyer for nature shots, or in conjunction with a 500D close up lens. I mostly do competition slide work and need to know how they compare to the Canon under these high enlargement conditions. Or do I need to spend over twice as much on the real thing? What are the pros & cons? Also, can anyone confirm for me that with the Canon, I would definitely lose AF @ 400mm on the EOS30, due to f8 maximum aperture. But that with a 3rd party extender which doesn't report the aperture, I may still retain workable AF under bright enough conditions, while suffering AF hunting if conditions are a little duller. Appreciate any and all input.
