Hi Norman I have experience only on Canon 1.4x and I have to say that even with that I would stop down preferably one stop (thus to effective f11) or more when I use the 100-400 at 400mm with it. I made some comparisons with 200/2.8 and 100-400 and got similar results with: - 200/2.8+1.4x (eff. f4), - 100-400 at 400mm, f5.6 and - 100-400 at 400mm plus Canon 1.4x stopped down (560mm eff. f11) 100-400 at 400mm plus Canon 1.4x wide open was clearly worse. I won't say if it is unusable for you (or me) or not, but this is one (off-topic) thing to keep in mind. The comparison was done with a 10x loupe from Sensia 100 slide film.
