My guess would be slightly dirty contacts. OK my direct experience isn't with a
1V, but with a s/h EF 200 f2.8L and with the PB-E2. The EF 200 f2.8L checked
out fine in the vendor's lounge, but when I next tried it, it hunted like mad -
far worse than my non L lenses on the same body. Taking it off and on the
camera twice completely cured this problem and I've had no problems since - some
5 years, I think. Lens/body contacts are wiping contacts and are cleaned every
time a lens is mounted /demounted.

Your PB-E2 uses different contacts for current carrying than those used by the
2CR5 battery holder. I'd suggest mounting and demounting your PB-E2 a few
times, and hopefully the problem will go away. At the most I'd recommend very
gentle use of a pencil eraser on the multiple contacts on the 1V which may have
been in storage for some time.
(I've got an EOS3 & PB-E2, and have spent some time chasing out which contacts
are used at different times.)
