I have tried it both ways with both the D30 and the D60, and I don't see
much of a benefit to the linear workflow.  With the D30, it allowed you
to bypass the sharpening function of the camera so you only have to
sharpen once in photoshop, but with the D60 software, you can turn
sharpening off at the raw conversion stage.  The advantage to using the
non-linear conversion is that the color/gamma is reasonably close once
you get it into photoshop, so there is less adjustment to be done.  I
use this approach with 16bit conversion, and would recommend that way of working.

If you want more info on linear workflows, look at the forums for the
D30/60 at www.dpreview.com.  It seems that every couple of days someone
posts a new linear profile and/or linear workflow action setup for photoshop.
