Thank you very much for your suggestions.

I had searched www.dpreview.com but didn't find anything of substance (they
do have some great rants though!).

I had also looked at  www.fredmiranda.com. Fred implies that worthwhile
improvements are to be had using the linear conversion in that images have
"broader dynamic range and color information (larger color gamut)".

This is undoubtedly true compared to 8 bit jpegs. But compared to a
non-linear conversion?

The linear route must be more than simply bypassing any sharpening. The fact
that the image opens as dark would suggests so.

So, what is the actual difference?
