Hmmm, interesting question. The question is whether the pc flash will
pre-fire under E-TTL. The pc cord connected flash cannot be
power-controlled by the camera so you will have to set the manual power and
if you set it to high it will not have enough charge to flash during the
main flash. If it does not fire during pre-flash it cannot be figured in
the exposure computation. Either way I don't see how e-ttl can work well in
this setup.

Straight TTL might work however, since the exposure is controlled during the
main flash. The in camera meter will sense light from both flashes and will
control the canon flash to create the proper exposure. Of course it is
possible that the pc flash will be too close , or too far away, to allow a
proper exposure but you can control this distance. The complication is that
you will have to run your guide numbers on the pc flash to determine which
flash will be providing the 'filling' since the canon flash could be main or
fill depending on the distance of the pc flash.

The best way , it seems to me, would be to go manual on both flashes and run
guide numbers on both. You can set the flash exposure on both flashes with
distance from the subject and power output on the flash.

You could also try the Sigma EF-500 , it advertises canon wireless
compatibility for $179 from B&H.

Subject: EOS 3 & external flash - advice needed

Dear All,

I have the following problem which I cannot solve based on the
manual. I use EOS 3 and two flashes: 550EX and 380EX . One flash is
connected directly to the camera. Second flash is connected using a standard
(non-Canon) cable to the socket for external (non-Canon) flashes (e.g.
studio flashes).

What I do not know is if EOS 3 during light evaluation takes this
second flash under consideration. In other words if I have Av mode turned on
the main flash will fill-in and the second flash? Will it also fill-in so
the picture is taken properly or will it just "fire" and the picture is
overexposed? Does E-TTL or TTL work with second flash?

I'd be gratefull for any help. Unfortunately I do not have money to buy
second 550EX to use remote control of both and I still would like to have
two sources of light.

Best regards,

        Michal Birnbach
