Hi
My guess is that the flash on the (non-Canon) extension lead will fire on full
power, which I think is the default when only the centre contact is connected.
You could reduce this by firing into or through a brolly.  I'd suggest running a
trial film and varying apertures, set-ups etc. and keeping good notes.  If
you're trying to set up a small studio which you can return to with the same
lighting arrangements you should be OK;  if you're trying for some more portable
set-up you'd probably be better off relying on one flash, controlled by the
E-TTL system and using reflectors to give you more apparent sources of light.

Saving up for a 2nd 550EX is definitely worthwhile!
