I believe you might be happy with the 17-35. I had one for about two years and am pleased with it. It has a number of features in it's favor, and only a couple of warts, in my opinion.
One minor flaw is it doesn't offer full time manual focusing despite being an HSM lens. It's rarely a problem however. More annoying is the 82 mm. filter thread. Besides the cost of filters in this size, my Lee filter holder won't fit properly. On the plus side, the lens focuses quickly and quietly, it's fast at 17mm., distortion is well controlled, and sharpness and contrast are excellent. Not to mention that for about a third the price of Canon's equivalent, you get a hood and a case, making it an attractive alternative. I've only hanlded the 15-30 once, so my experience is limited, but it is bigger and heavier, slower, still has the 82 mm. filter thread, and costs more. It would have to be leaps and bounds better optically to get my attention. Good luck in your search.
