Nigel,

I just did a test with my EOS5 and 430EZ (& 50 1.4 / ISO100). When I point
on a (light) subject that is further away, then I get something
like 1/125 and f5.6, but when I point on a subject nearby, I get something
like 1/60 and f22. Mayby this is happening also with your EOS3 & 540EZ.

Just an idea ;-)
