Up until recently I have had an EOS 5 and 540EZ but recently upgraded to
the EOS 3 and have yet to follow suit with the flash. I have been using
the 540EZ with the EOS 3 and noticed that in P mode (ie when I am not using
a tripod) the camera chooses extremely small apertures. Normally if I am
using a tripod I use Av or Tv but when hand holding in dusk like situations
I have normally used P because it ensures that I don't over-expose the
background by guessing the exposure and fixing it in Manual.

However I recently took some photos using the EOS 3, 70-200 f2.8, 540EZ and
400 speed film and noticed that P mode selected a shutter speed of 1/60 and
an aperture of f22 or f32. I figured this didn't make sense so changed to
Manual mode and chose a shutter speed of 1/60 (I know a little slow) and
f2.8 and as you can imagine the results came out a million times better.
Fortunately I didn't over-expose the background and I was photographing
people who were very tolerant of my changing settings etc., but I am
curious why it would do that. I am sure it never did that with the EOS 5
so I can't figure out why the 3 would do it.

Any ideas?

Nigel.
