Actually I think letter code P is 2001, not 2002, but the principle is correct (factory/year/month/batch).
There was a rumour that Canon made significant internal improvements to the 1N around 1997 and the new batch have serial numbers commencing with 2 rather than 1 (I think); you may find this, probably with fuller and more accurate details than I can recall, if you search the archives.
