I know this is not the answer you seek, but one advantage you have is too
shoot in RAW mode.  I just got a D60, and I have also noted some low
exposure shots, especially with flash.  The RAW mode allows you - + 2 full
stops of exposure adjustment in the computer, and it works!   Again, I know
this is bypassing the problem, but it is a solution, and a way to save
nearly any otherwise useless photo due to exposure and or white balance
problems.
