Using a carefully controlled test environment as articulated by Canon USA, I
recently spent some time 'profiling' the exposure performance of my 1D. I
used my D30 as a control reference.

I was prompted to do this because I started seeing problems as soon as I
started using my 28-70 f/2.8L zoom on the 1D, noting substantial
underexposure. Noting comment from some others in the past few months, that
the 1D was possibly flawed with respect to the 28-70 zoom, yet further
noting Canon's continued silence on this subject, I decided to do my own
investigation.

Here are the results of my testing.

Lens FL 1D D30
16-35 f/2.8L 35 +2/3 +1/3
50 f/1.4 50 +1 +1/3
28-70 f/2.8L 70 +1 +1/3
70-200 f/2.8L 200 +2/3 +1/3
70-200 f/2.8L IS 200 +2/3 +1/3

Thus, a couple of my conclusions are:

1. Specific only to my 1D, it is substantially out of calibration. I'll
send it in to Canon USA for repair after an upcoming shoot on Sep. 7th.
(I'd send in the D30 too but it's no longer in warranty.)

2. The 1D's exposure calibration varies as a function of focal length and/or
lens. This agrees with other comments I have seen that complain that the
1D's exposure accuracy seems to be incorrect with a particular lens,
especially the 28-70 f/2.8L, but perhaps not so with others. I'm not
convinced there's a specific problem with the 1D's compatibility with the
28-70; instead, I think the 1D has to be exposure adjusted at varying focal
lengths.

(Details on test procedure and environment: Used a Kodak Q-14 Gray Scale in
typical room lighting, manual focus, spot metering, f/8 aperture; K reading
from Zone M on the Q-14 should be 55%, plus or minus 5%. With the above
exposure compensation amounts, indeed, I obtained the 55% performance.

Hope this helps.

With what kind of lenses does that happen and with what lenses does it not
happen? I do not have a 1D (only 'analog' 1ns) so I don't have a solution. I
