>AF is much better with the 3 & 1V. Begging the question, what is 'big glass', this business of 'no AF' in Ray's original reply "You lose AF with Canon 2x extender. EOS 3 & 1V allow AF at f/8 which = includes the Canon 2x." puzzles me - it seems that this is not always the case. As Jim knows, I've recently been playing with a 300L IS f/4 on my EOS50E. On occasion - well most, so far! - I've also added the Kenko/Teleplus 7 element 2x tele converter. It is a pleasant surprise to find that in reasonable light this combination can autofocus. Am I missing something or is that 'reasonable light' the key to it all? For what it is worth, I've posted a sample from Monday's (yesterday) shooting at http://www.oldhuish.org/egret24.jpg - but don't expect any revelations. What I know about scanning is largely due to Jim's patience and what I don't know would fill a few books! Nevertheless, the print, scanned at 600 and reduced from 3510 pixels to 720 wide, looks pretty good to me. (Handheld, IS on, 2x converter). The alternative to the converter would have been wet feet or, more likely, a bird out of sight.
