Canon hasn't said, as far as I know, but I would guess a) to save
costs and b) because the wide 7-point focus area would require a larger
LED housing somewhere which would detract from the svelte compact lines
that are selling points for both cameras. Whatever the reason, it's
certainly an annoying drawback.
As noted, a lot of people slap a flash unit or ST-E2 transmitter on
just to get a decent AF assist, though only the 420EX covers all 7
points of the EOS 30/33/Elan 7/7E/7. Also, didn't someone on this list
suggest taping a laser pointer to their camera? I wouldn't recommend
this approach if you do portraits, however, for fear of blinding your
subjects.
