If you plan on doing a lot of astrophotography then an all-manual camera is probably your best bet. However, if you want to stick with Canon EOS you could also consider some of the earliest generation of EOS cameras, which are capable of holding their shutters open without battery power. The 600 series cameras can do this, as can the 10/10s.

I'd recommend looking into the 10/10s - it's about the same used as a new Rebel Ti/300V, yet is a very capable camera. The main drawbacks of the 10/10s are no E-TTL and FP flash and no rear command wheel, plus some interface annoyances. It even gives you a built-in intervalometer.
