The EOS 3 is capable of long exposures without draining the batteries, but that might
be more money than you're willing to spend.  The other option could be a used EOS
10s.  They haven't been made since 1990 (I think), but they also won't drain the
battery, and have a neat intervalometer, which might be useful.  I picked up a used
one last summer for about the same as a new 300 would have cost, and have been
pleased with it.
