Hi Alex, The * marked button on the rear of the camera is for partial metering, and Auto Exposure Lock. Spot metering is set by use of the metering button on the left of the pentaprism and the main dial. You'll see a spot in the lower left of the LCD screen, viz:
>From my EOS3 manual:- "Nothing" is centre weighted metering. Spot is simple - a central spot; partial is 2 arcs without a centre; and evaluative is a central spot surrounded by the two arcs. I've seen some non-Canon references getting these wrong. To ensure you meter off the centre use CF13=0, viz: CF13 Focus point and spot meter linkage 0 No linkage. Always at centre 1 Spot metering linked to 1 of 11 focus points 2 No linkage. Only 11 focus points Hope the above mini-table survives transmission.
