Hey Michael, according to the manual of my new acquired 550EX, you indeed
have to be sure there are 4xAA of rechargeable inside even if you use turbo
pack for main power source for the flash. The internal electronics circuitry
is powered by the batteries, why the tube energy is supplied by the external
pack.

Good luck with your assignment, we all watching closely TV worrying for the
people. Be careful, life and health is always more important then even the
best photo made...(although it has apparently ended already)

Regards,
Alex Z

Can anyone tell me if the 550 requires batteries to be fresh in the
internal holder while using an external pack (such as the Transistor
Pack E)? Or is there something wrong with my pack and or flash? I've
asked a few of the other photographers and they all think the same thing
- that the HV input should bypass the internal power...however, to be
honest, we all have never given this much thought before.

As I'm covering the Moscow situation, I'd appreciate a quick reply...

Thanks
