Paul I owned and used both 1 and 1n and as far as my memory works the
biggest difference was the AF speed and more focusing points lighting in red
when selected by user or or chosen by camera software. Metering could be
slightly improved as every camera generation gets more information in the
database that feeds metering system in evaluative metering mode. I couldn't
see any changes in metering accuracy. One interesting point was the flash
using the focus selected point to get pictures well exposed but anyway the
flash acuracy was far behind the Nikon system, I'm a both systems user, and
it was not until the arrival of EX flashes that both were on pair. If you
are considering to get a used EOS 1 you can, for sure get some at bargain
price but they come from Pros who used them intensively and it does not seem
a good idea, but if you find a EOS1 used and cared by an advanced amateur
you get a truly rugged camera that can give you years of loyal service with
excelent metering and acceptable slow autofocus. I never used an EOS in
manual focus so I cannot comment your last question.

Kind regards

Felix
