Japanese webpage says: EF 180 f3.5 Macro USM L shortest photographing
distance: 0.48m

How about that 65mm EOS specialty lens?
The CANON MP - E65mm F2.8 1 - 5 x macro
Shortest photographing distance 24cm. - max. mag. ratio 5:1

Some new lenses in Japan are below. (translated from Japanese
webpages)

Canon EF 90-300 f4.5-5.6 USM zoom.
It uses 8 'circular' diaphram blades and has new faster CPU algorithm
abilities. This lens is very compact too. Price, about $240 US.

Tamron AF24 - 135mm F3.5 - 5.6 AD IF macro lens.
High magnification ratio zoom first SP (elevated meter specification)
series. 4 aspherical lenses and 1 abnormal partial dispersion lens -
shortest photographing distance 40cm - maximum macro magnification
ratio 1: 3.3. In addition if there is a " zoom lock mechanism " and
locks the ring with the knob during lens carrying so zoom does not
extend. Price, about $450 US.

Sigma lens AF28 - 105mm F3.8 - 5.6 UC - III IF
This lens focuses to 1:2 at 50cm. Price, about $120 US.

Sigma lens COMPACT HYPERZOOM 28-300mm F3.5-6.3 ASPHERICAL CANON
With the special low dispersion glass and an aspherical lens. Due to
internal focusing, the front does not turn. Price, about $280 US.

Sigma lens AF 70 - 300mm F4 - 5.6 APO macro super
Macro photographing to 1 / 2 times is possible with the focal length
300mm. Price, about $200 US.

It seems the 3rd party lens makers are all using molded aspherics and
LD now, even on the cheaper lenses. And they're making some great zoom
ranges, many with 8 'circular' diaphram blades, non-rotating fronts,
and close focusing, in some very compact sizes. Also, they seem no
longer to have the focus ring turn. Very tempting indeed to try one of
these. One thing is though, the filter sizes vary quite a bit more
than Canon, and the zoom rings work in reverse to Canon.

I would particularly like to try the Tamron 24-135 lens, and the Sigma
70-300 APO.
