You hit the nail right on the head !!   It's purely marketing hype.  Did you notice 
the 28-70/2.8 ads that say "designed for digital" ?  Despite this lens coming out in 
1993. :-)

Digital is the big buzz right now and anything that is marketed as "digital specific" 
tends to garner attention. Have you noticed the digital tripods ?  Digital gadget bags 
?
