Probably, and that is the main reason people view the lens changing
length when zooming as a drawback.  But it seems to me that performance
would be significantly more affected by flare due to poor shielding (by
a lesser lens/hood design) from stray light sources from the day the
lens is purchased than from a little bit of dust that may or may not
ever get into the lens.

For other lenses I just wish Canon had longer hoods for each lens
specifically for the D30/60 frame cropping.  It seems like they could
make a killing selling two hoods to those of us willing to pay for it,
and I would have a lot less lens flare to deal with if they offered this option.
