Hi Robert,

1:1 ratio - definitely!  This is the same principle as 6x6 medium format - you take 
everything with the camera in one orientation and crop the image to suit afterward.  
Using the full 35mm image circle and high enough resolution, this would work perfectly 
well.

It would also reduce the requirements for vertical grips as you'd always be shooting 
in the same orientation.  As much as I love VG's with a full set of shutter controls 
(like the D30/60 grip or the VG-10) the cameras would be smaller and lighter without 
that added.

The only disadvantage is that you don't get *quite* as much angle of view (not 
diagonal) with wide angles with a square format compared to a rectangular format, but 
I can see that a choice of square or rectangular format using the full image circle 
(not just masked down) could be designed into future cameras anyway.
