I have this lens and the HSM is very similar to USM.  It is as quiet and 
just as fast in my use of the lens.  I think its a great alternative to 
the 17 or 16-35mm from Canon.

All the work I have done with this lens (not too much, but enough to know 
good/bad) has proven this lens to be a great low cost alternative to the 
canon glass.  I personally cannot see a difference, but I have not gotten 
up close and personal to many of the negs/slides.
