While I don't have the lens myself I have seen comment from a number of people on various websites (e.g. dpreview.com) that their samples of the 24-70 do the same thing - stiff from 24-35 and okay from there and also okay when zooming from 70 down to 24. One poster stated that Canon will adjust the lens if required...
