I wonder if ring flash might result in a picture that is too flat. Red eye issues aside, light reflections in the eye will have a circular "doughnut" shape.
But what the hell! Try it and let us know how it works! Also, I get the impression that the rings *might* cause vignetting at non-macro distances, because I think the "hole" in the middle of the flash is only in the size range of 60mm. I'm not sure, as I never tried it, but it might be an issue. The power of the ringlight is limited as well, so it probably won't work all that well as fill flash in daylight, and the other issue is, that if you are thinking of it as a main light in a dark studio (ala flat fashion lighting) you may have issues with red eye. You could reduce the pupil size by lightening up the studio, but then you would probably run into issues with the power of the flash. I know using ringlights, attached to powerpacks, was in vogue in fashion several years ago, but I don't know how they dealt with these issues, except, perhaps, in retouching. Sorry I cannot be more helpful or certain about these issues, but like I said, I have strongly considered buying the ring light as an ETTL wireless controller and fill flash for use in location portraiture (controlling the 550EX on a stand), and these are the issues that occurred to me. Maybe someone else can give some response on how important these issues really are? Thanks, and good luck. Also, if you get private responses, can I ask you to forward them to me?
