What's with this perennial debate over the merits of L lenses?

As we all know Canon designates an L lens because of it's optical
construction (i.e it has aspheric, ULD or fluorite elements). Thereare one
or two non L lenses with moulded aspherics (the24-85 being one). Apparently,
in Canon think this doesn't count for naming puropses.

I don't think there is one L lens with a moulded aspheric?

It has no direct relevance to the optical performance.

I wouldn't mind betting that the 24-85 outperforms, in most areas, the
35-350L at like focal lengths and apertures.

The TSE 24L is no better than either of the other non-LTSEs.

Sure the 24-70L will, but at a price. Maybe not just financial. Imagine all
those pictures that might getaway because you found the24-70L too heavy to
cart around.

Just my 2 pennyworth.
