Hi All, With the great interest shown in the 10D, the other interesting recent release has been virtually overlooked in the rush. Canon's new 17-40 F4L is a lens that I seem to recall a number of list members saying they would love to have (along with a 28-105 f4L!). It presumably has the quality optics of the 16-35L, similar build (it certainly looks quite a bit like it) but with a one stop reduction in maximum aperture.
Has anyone seen any specs or reviews (I've seen the press releases and they've been singularly uninformative)? With the other pair or of f2.8/f4 L lenses (70-200 f2.8L & F4L) the f4 lens is half the weight, half the price and (barring the extra stop) is of equal optical and build quality to the f2.8 version. I wonder whether the same thing will be the case here? I would hope so as an f4L wide angle zoom priced (and sized) too closely to the f2.8L is going to battle for market share. The other question will be how does it compare optically (and size and price too I guess) to the very good mid priced 20-35 f3.5-4.5 USM? The 17-40/70-200 f4L pair could certainly make a great travel/hiking combo! Regards Gary This message has passed through an insecure network.
