Stopped down a little (say, f/4 or below) and with a tripod, the 50/1.8
will produce results comparable to any L lens. You may even find it's
the lens you've been looking for, but in any case you won't lose much -
it's only some US$100 new, and you can always sell it later if you don't
like it.
