Bob, Your best bet is probably buying from B&H, Adorama, or Camera World of Oregon. This has several advantages. First you do not have to pay sales taxes which you are not required to pay anyways, I think, as you bring the gear outside the US. Second, you can make the purchases yourself and don't have to bother your colleage. Third, the local camera store is probably more expensive. Last but not least the above shops probably have about everything you need which might not be the case with the local dealer, in particular when the stored is called 'OFFICE World' (If it's anything like Office Depot then they probably only have some digi cams). So if you know exactly what you want then doing a mail-order to your friend's place is quite likely the best solution.
