I use both the 50/2.5 and 100/2.8 USM macros, mostly for botanical work. I used to use the ML-3 ringflash and bought the MR-14EX as a replacement some time ago. The ML-3 is TTL, and would work fine with an A2 if you want a less expensive entry point to ring flash than the MR-14EX. The MR-14EX is a superb piece of kit. I sometimes use it to control a 550EX to provide background lighting. The ring flash works really well with the 50/2.5 lens. I find it slightly less good with the 100/2.8. It is a bit low on power for the greater working distances involved in medium close-up work (using a balanced flash/daylight technique), and if you want to use a filter on the lens you have to use a 58mm adaptor on that to allow the flash to be mounted, and that combination locks together very easily. The MT-24EX avoids these problems (it has its own filter thread).
